October 2022 – Strengthening Collaboration for the “Zero Waste Mekong River” Project in Can Tho
In early October 2022, representatives from GreenHub met with leaders of the People’s Committee of Le Binh Ward, officers from the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Cai Rang District, and representatives from RECERD.
The meeting was held as part of the project “For a Zero Waste Mekong River – Piloting the Circular Economy Model at Floating Markets in Can Tho City.”
Project Highlights (November 2021 – October 2022):
With strong support and cooperation from local authorities, the project successfully carried out a series of impactful activities, including:

Waste audit at Cai Rang Floating Market, revealing that 79% of total waste was plastic.

Official project launch ceremony, marking the collaboration among the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the People’s Committees of Cai Rang and Binh Thuy Districts, GreenHub, and Dow Chemical Vietnam Co., Ltd.

Cleanup event in Cai Rang District with 120 participants, collecting an estimated 170 kg of plastic waste.

Zero Waste training session for over 30 residents living around Cai Rang Floating Market.

Workshop to share findings from the household waste survey at Con Son and Cai Rang Floating Market.

Consultation workshop on proposed solutions for the “No Waste Mekong River” initiative.
Meeting Outcomes and Next Steps:
The meeting outlined an activity plan for the next two quarters, with both sides agreeing to:

Pilot waste sorting and collection for 29 boats operating at Cai Rang Floating Market.

Support hygienic waste management by testing dry sanitation facilities on household boats.

Enhance communication and awareness by decorating business spots with murals and banners promoting environmental messages.

Facilitate policy implementation — the Le Binh Ward People’s Committee to develop and issue a pilot plan for waste sorting and collection in line with the Law on Environmental Protection (2020).

The project is funded by Dow Chemical Vietnam Co., Ltd. (Dow Vietnam) and implemented by the Center for Supporting Green Development (GreenHub) and the Center for Resources and Rural Development (RECERD), with the support and partnership of the People’s Committee of Can Tho City and the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Can Tho City.
