Behind the free shipping codes, zero-cost orders, and promotional campaigns of e-commerce platforms lies a “mountain” of plastic waste. Adhesive tape, plastic bags, foam boxes, and plastic containers are often discarded immediately after the excitement of “unboxing.”
According to a survey by Lazada, over 50% of consumers consider online shopping as a type of lifestyle, and nearly 60% say they will continue shopping online. This means the amount of plastic waste released into the environment will only grow more alarming. However, we cannot deny that online shopping contributed $13.7 billion in revenue in 2021 alone, just in Vietnam (as reported by the Ministry of Industry and Trade in 2022).
So how can we balance indulging in online sales while protecting the environment? All these questions will be addressed in the first episode of the PlasPics podcast.
