Marine Debris & Plastic Pollution

Project Details

Project Title:Moving Toward Model Cities for Waste Management in Coastal Northeast Vietnam
Location: Ha Long Bay, Ha Long city - Quang Ninh Province, Cat Ba Archipelago - Hai Phong City, Vietnam
Period:24 months (31st Mar 2018 – 31st Mar 2020)

Description

The project is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), through Municipal Waste Recycling Program (MWRP) - Development Innovation Group (DIG). The project will be implemented through collaboration between the Project Lead, the Center for Supporting Green Development (GreenHub), and co-applicants, International Collaborating Centre for Aquaculture and Fisheries Sustainability (ICAFIS), and Pacific Environment.

The primary goal of this project is to reduce marine plastic pollution and set the groundwork for a waste management campaign towards model cities in the project sites. The project will address the plastics pollution coming from the floating aquaculture installations and from the tourist boats through several community engagement proposals.

The project methodology will advance public education, awareness-raising campaigns, interaction with local micro/small enterprises in the fishing and tourism sectors, technology providers, and coordination with the local authority on the legal and regulatory front and improve enforcement mechanisms.

The problem of polystyrene leakage from floating aquaculture installations will be addressed through the piloting of alternative, environmentally friendly materials. The Ha Long - Cat Ba Alliance and local authorities will also be engaged in policy advocacy and in driving the implementation of the action plan to reduce marine debris in the area.
