The campaign “Our ocean is not home for plastic” is implemented by GreenHub within the framework of the project “The Accelerating Efforts to Reduce Ocean Plastic in Vietnam”, sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy.
The goal of the project is to create behavior change in the direction of reducing plastic waste to the ocean through communication activities, aiming to support communication and implementation of the Action Plan Marine Plastic Waste Management to 2030 (NAP) in Phu Yen.
Therefore, the campaign “Our ocean is not home for plastic” in Phu Yen is not just a simple CleanUp campaign. With the goal of cleaning up the coast of Phu Yen and collecting data for activities and projects on marine plastic waste and improving the environment in the future, all data from the waste that was collected through the campaign will be added to the CleanSwell® – an application developed by the Ocean Conservansy.
The application makes it easy for everyone to protect our oceans. Users can add their information about types of waste to help scientists and advocates around the world to solve the problem of ocean waste on a global scale.
The campaign was carried out in 04 districts, towns and coastal cities of Phú Yên province with the participation of hundreds of local volunteers. The campaign was implemented in the days of changing seasons in Phú Yên, causing the volunteers to face many difficulties, because the rains and thunderstorms also often come at any time suddenly.
At the end of the activity, the volunteers cleaned up four km of coastline on four beaches of Phú Yên province, starting from Đông Hòa district and ending at Tuy Hòa city, with more than 3 tons of waste and contributing an important amount of data to CleanSwell with more than 10000 entered waste component entries.
This campaign is the first step to prepare for a long way to solve the problem of plastic waste in the sea of Phú Yên and other coastal provinces of Việt Nam.
