In early October 2022, representatives from GreenHub had a direct meeting with the leaders of Le Binh Ward People's Committee, experts from the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Cai Rang District and representatives of RECERD. The meeting was within the framework of the project "For a Zero - Waste Mekong River - Piloting a Circular Economy Model in Floating Markets in Can Tho City".
With enthusiastic support and cooperation from local authorities, the project has organized outstanding activities from November 2021 to October 2022:
- Waste audit of Cai Rang floating market area, showing that up to 79% of waste is plastic;
- The launching ceremony of the project "For a Zero-Waste Mekong River" marked the official cooperation between the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Cai Rang District People's Committee, Binh Thuy District People's Committee, GreenHub and Dow Chemical Vietnam Co., Ltd.;
- Cleaning up waste in Cai Rang district with 120 participants and an estimated 170kg of plastic waste collected after the program;
- Zero waste training for more than 30 people living in Cai Rang floating market area;
- Workshop to share the results of the survey of household waste in Son islet and Cai Rang floating market;
- Workshop to consult on solutions "For a garbage-free Mekong".
The meeting also proposed an action plan for the next 2 quarters, in which the two sides agreed on:
- Pilot plan for Waste classification and collection for 29 boats on Cai Rang floating market;
- Support for sanitary waste treatment by piloting dry sanitation equipment on household boats;
- Support for decorating business locations combined with propaganda: painting murals, hanging slogan panels;
- The ward People's Committee developed and issued a pilot policy for waste classification and collection according to the 2020 Law on Environmental Protection.
