Recently, a delegation from the Center for Supporting Green Development (GreenHub), the Research Center for Resources and Rural Development (RECERD) and representatives of the project sponsor “For a Zero-Waste Mekong River” made a trip to inspect project activities to promote zero-waste practices at Con Son and Cai Rang Floating Market, Can Tho City.
Being a floating island in the middle of the Hau River, with only 57 households, Con Son seems isolated from the outside world and maintains its own green and prosperous appearance. In particular, right from the first steps on Con Son, visitors can feel the cleanliness and orderliness of this small island. This is partly thanks to the results of the project “For a Zero-Waste Mekong River” sponsored by DOW Company, chaired by GreenHub and coordinated by the Research Center for Resources and Rural Development (RECERD).
One of the Project's supports is to mobilize households to classify and collect waste at fixed times during the week. The Project also organizes to maintain a garbage collector to visit each household to collect the difficult-to-recycle waste, then gather it at the garbage collection point to transfer it to the mainland for processing. Each month, the estimated amount of collected waste is about 800kg.
The working group also inspected the "Banana Circle" models at Con Son. These are the composting points for organic waste to make fertilizer for the people, with technical support from the project. In addition, the model of composting fruit peels to make enzymes has also been tested by some households at Con Son and has shown positive results.
At Cai Rang floating market, the group directly participated in the garbage collection boat on the river supported by the Project. Thanks to the Project, waste from floating rafts on Cai Rang floating market has been collected daily, minimizing the littering on the river, contributing to keeping the Mekong River clean and green.
