VNZW – Strong Commitment to Environmental protection in Social-economic development in Phu Yen Province

On 8/11/2019, the Scientific conference on environmental protection orientation in the process of socio-economic development of Phu Yen Province was jointly organized by People’s Committee of Phu Yen province and the Centre for Supporting Green Development – GreenHub. The conference had the full participation of departments, agencies, localities, socio-political organizations, associations of Phu Yen province, science and technology organizations and domestic and international experts. The program was chaired by Mr. Pham Dai Duong – Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee – Chairman of the People’s Committee of Phu Yen province, Ms. Tran Thi Hoa – Director of Centre for Supporting Green Development and Assoc.Prof-PhD Nguyen Chu Hoi- Former Deputy General Director of Vietnam Administration of Sea and Islands. Specially, the Conference was honored to have the participation of Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh – Member of the Central Committee of the Party- Deputy Minister of Defence with comrades from the Vietnam-Russia Tropical Center.

In 5 hours, the workshop listened to 8 presentations from the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Phu Yen province, Assoc.Prof-PhD. Nguyen Chu Hoi, Dr. Philips Spencer Rickert, the Centre for Supporting Green Development- GreenHub, Global Environment Fund (SGP/GEF) Small Project Grant Program, Vietnam – Russia Tropical Center, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Pacific Environment (PE). In addition, the Conference also received discussions to contribute opinions from departments, agencies, business organizations inside and outside the locality that brought a lot of useful information, professional assessment, lessons learned to contribute to the “Orientation to protect the environment in the social-economical development process of Phu Yen province. 

The conference started with a presentation about “Main environmental problems of Phu Yen province and orientations on protecting the environment in developing economy and society” presented by Ms. Le Dao An Xuan- Vice Director of Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Phu Yen Province. These issues were further clarified in the presentation “Marine environmental issues that need to be prioritized to be solved for the sustainable development of the marine economy in Phu Yen” by Assoc. Prof-PhD. Nguyen Chu Hoi. The presentation of Assoc.Prof- PhD. Chu Hoi aimed to contribute to build up a “Green Phu Yen”, strong about beaches, enrich from beaches, relying on the sea and facing the sea.

Following Assoc. Prof- PhD. Nguyen Chu Hoi, Ms. Tran Thi Hoa reported at the seminar “Some results of auditing domestic waste and marine waste – Basis for proposing zero-waste solutions in Phu Yen”. The alarming number of plastic waste and organic waste at the workshop showed signs of unconscious consumption as well as the impact of tourism on the current situation of waste in Phu Yen. Together with Ms. Tran Thi Hoa, representative of Vietnam – Russia Tropical Center, reported “Coral ecosystem, seagrass in Hon Yen area – Status and issues of management and conservation”.

From the current situation in Phu Yen, Dr. Phillips Spencer Rickert contributed at the workshop “Some environmental protection orientations in the Socio-Economic Development Plan for the next 5 years”. Besides, Ms. Nicole Portley (Pacific Environment), Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen (SGP/GEF) presented some good practices on environmental protection and waste treatment in both domestic, international. Next was the content of some opportunities and potentials to approach environmental projects for Phu Yen by Ms. Tran Thu Huong (WWF).

At the workshop, there was also a signing ceremony of the cooperation program on biodiversity conservation and ecological diversity in Phu Yen province between the Phu Yen provincial People’s Committee and the Vietnam – Russia Tropical Center.

Also there, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Phu Yen province awarded certificates to 12 excellent business units and individuals participating in waste audit and green practice activities implemented by Centre for Supporting Green Development – GreenHub with the collaboration of Department of Natural Resources and Environment. This was a recognition and encouragement of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment in particular and Phu Yen province in general for the participations of business units and the youth force in the process of local environmental protection.
