In a world where sustainability and environmental conservation have become more crucial than ever, the impact of human activities on the environment is increasingly evident as the global population continues to rise. It is essential that we take action now to protect our planet—and that is precisely what the Cần Giờ Delegation is striving to do. To further inspire new ideas, GreenHub, in collaboration with USAID and the Coca-Cola Foundation, sponsored a learning tour to explore sustainable and environmental conservation models in Đà Nẵng and Hội An for the Cần Giờ Delegation.
Over the course of four days and three nights, the delegation had the opportunity to visit various locations pioneering sustainable initiatives across the region. From zero-waste schools to the Happiness Shop and Cẩm Lệ Plastic-Reduction Market, delegates were deeply engaged as they observed and learned about each project’s implementation. They were particularly inspired by the creativity of local authorities in adapting these models to their available resources.
One of the most inspiring visits was to Tôn Đức Thắng Primary School, a pilot school for a green, plastic-waste-reducing education model. Here, the delegation learned about recycling activities and waste segregation education for students. The school also developed creative ways to engage parents in managing packaging waste, classifying trash at the classroom level, and even recycling milk cartons into educational display models. This not only reduces the school's environmental impact but also provides students with valuable lessons on sustainability. The model received great interest from the delegation, as it offers high adaptability and aligns well with local resources.
Another highlight of the tour was the visit to the Happiness Shop, a retail space selling sustainable, eco-friendly products made from recycled materials. The shop represents a shift from conventional consumerism to sustainable consumption, while also creating economic opportunities for disadvantaged workers. The delegation had the chance to speak with the shop’s management about the challenges and opportunities of running a green business. They were especially moved by the passion and dedication of the artisans, who, despite being part of vulnerable groups, remained optimistic and highly skilled in their craft.
Throughout the tour, the delegation was continually impressed by the passion and commitment of the local experts and project managers they met. It was evident that their contributions—both as individuals and collectives—extended beyond environmental conservation, creating meaningful positive impacts on their communities. The delegation remained energized and inspired as they explored these initiatives.
At the end of the tour, the delegates participated in a wrap-up session to share their key learnings. They presented new initiatives and ideas that could be implemented in Cần Giờ, along with the potential positive impacts these efforts could bring. They left the session feeling confident in their ability to make a real difference in their community and apply the insights gained from this tour in meaningful ways.
The learning tour in Đà Nẵng and Hội An was an enriching experience for the Cần Giờ Delegation, providing them with inspiration, new ideas, and a renewed sense of purpose. By exploring sustainable models and environmental conservation efforts, they witnessed firsthand the positive changes that can occur when individuals and communities commit to sustainability. As the delegation returns home with a stronger commitment to sustainability, their journey is far from over. What’s next for Cần Giờ? Stay tuned with GreenHub for upcoming updates!
