The GreenTalk Environmental Public Speaking Competition, co-organized by GreenHub for the first time in 2019, attracted strong interest and created positive impacts among young people and the wider community. Let’s take a look at some of the achievements of GreenTalk 2019 and stay tuned for Season 2, which will soon be revealed with a brand new look in the coming days!

According to the 2018 Youth Survey on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) conducted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), young people’s interest in Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and Goal 14 (Life Below Water) was relatively low. Only 4.8% and 7.5% of Vietnamese youth selected these goals among the top three SDGs they cared about most and were willing to take action on.

To encourage young people to take action toward these goals, GreenHub co-organized the environmental public speaking competition “GreenTalk: Voices from Nature” in 2019.

The competition received more than 350 applications, from which 40 contestants were selected to participate in three challenge rounds focused on developing creative individual and community solutions to address environmental issues in Vietnam.

Nguyễn Thị Hoàng Anh, Runner-up of the competition and a student from Uông Bí High School shared her experience with GreenTalk:

“Before joining GreenTalk, I thought that if I wanted to solve environmental problems, I had to do it alone. But after the competition, I realized that I would have teammates walking this journey with me — and I will never give up."

In its first year, GreenTalk successfully reached a new audience, including people who had previously shown little interest in the environmental challenges that GreenHub addresses or in developing creative solutions to the waste crisis.

• More than 500 eco friendly products were sold at Hòn Gai High School, raising over 5 million VND to support environmental activities of the Green Ha Long Club.

• Youth environmental clubs were established or strengthened at Ha Long University, Uông Bí High School, and Hòn Gai High School.
