Most of us have likely encountered the 3R model—Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle—in school. However, today, seven plastic students from the Plastic Classifight class are here to introduce an advanced version: the 5R model, which emphasizes rethinking our approach to plastic waste and changing our behaviors towards it.
To minimize waste generation, the 5R model expands on the traditional 3Rs by incorporating two additional steps:
- Rethink – Reevaluate our consumption habits and question whether we truly need single-use plastics.
- Refuse – Say no to unnecessary plastic products and packaging.
- Reduce – Minimize plastic use whenever possible.
- Reuse – Find new purposes for plastic items instead of discarding them.
- Recycle – Process plastic waste into new products when all other options have been exhausted.
It’s crucial to remember that recycling should always be the last resort in waste management. Proper waste sorting is essential to ensure efficient recycling and minimize environmental impact.

Plastic Classifight is an activity within the framework of the project "Reducing plastic waste pollution with local solutions" (Local Solutions for Plastic Pollution - LSPP) funded by the United States Agency for International Development - USAID under the program "Vietnam Local Activities Project for Environmental Health" implemented by GreenHub and partners. The campaign aims to raise awareness and change behavior in the use and habit of classifying plastic waste, reusing plastic for a green lifestyle and sustainable change for the environment.
